Rapper Nelly Owes $2.4 Million In Taxes

His career took off in the early 2000s. Now, he’s rapping his way through tax troubles.

Rapper Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., is facing financial trouble with the Internal Revenue Service and the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The “Hot in Herre” artist, whose career skyrocketed in the early 2000s, was hit with a $2.4 million federal tax lien in August, according to TMZ.

The lien, which could lead to the seizure of Nelly’s property and assets, comes as the rapper works to resolve the debt with the IRS.

In addition, the Missouri Department of Revenue is pursuing Nelly for $149,511 in unpaid state taxes from 2013. The original amount of $113,533 has grown due to interest.

Nelly, who first gained fame with his 2000 debut album Country Grammar, is known for his blend of hip-hop and pop, producing hits like “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre,” and “Dilemma.” Country Grammar was recently certified diamond, making it the eighth hip-hop album to reach the milestone.
